Course Description

This course will focus on the therapeutic process, examining the meanings communicated by both patient and therapist, and how individual dynamics are expressed in the present, particularly the therapeutic setting. Articles will be assigned from time to time when applicable to a case.

Goals

  1. Deepen our understanding of the free associative mode of conveying psychic meaning.
  2. Deepen our understanding of the transference, countertransference interplay in the therapeutic setting.
  3. Further integrate the clinical phenomena with theoretical understandings.

Evaluation

This is a pass-fail course, based on active class participation. Case presentations are of active treatment cases. The written part of this includes process recordings of two sessions plus a written introduction to the patient, including relevant history. Additionally, students are asked to submit two response papers regarding some aspect of the case presentation or class discussion that aroused interest. These are to be approximately one page in length.

Attendance is expected except in emergencies and/or pre-arranged with the instructor.

Schedule

Sessions one through eight: Case presentation, discussion, and submission of response papers.
