How does the ICSW Distance Learning Program work?
The Distance Learning Program delivers the same high-quality educational experience as the on-site program by blending distance and on-site classes. Clinical and research consultation, which are key components of ICSW’s doctoral program, are also offered in a blended format. Approximately 2/3 of the classes are offered online and the remaining 1/3 meet on-site at ICSW. On-site classes are held all day on Saturday and continue through Sunday morning, twice each semester.
Who is the Distance Learning Program for?
The Distance learning program is for students who live beyond a 150-mile radius of the Chicago area or whose family, work, or religious commitments makes regular commuting to ICSW impossible.
What are online classes like?
The distance learning courses are offered live, using a video conferencing platform. Students and instructors have video and audio contact with each other during the class session. This means that instructors and students can interact in “real time” while seeing and hearing one another. Readings and lecture outlines will be available online to prepare students for their classes.
Who will teach the courses?
ICSW faculty will teach the courses, covering the same course content as on-site classes. Clinical and research consultants are chosen by the student from the roster of available faculty who are prepared to work with the distance model.
What about additional resources?
The ICSW digital library provides access to a wide array of periodicals and other reference materials, including the Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing Archives. Our librarian is available for consultation by phone or email. Students will have advisors and consultants to provide support and individualized tutorials during the course of the program. ICSW believes that relationships are important assets to student learning. We have a very high faculty-student ratio and encourage cohort support; this is essential to a successful distance learning experience.
What equipment do I need?
You need a relatively up-to-date computer system, cable modem, video camera (webcam), and audio headset. We also expect applicants to be comfortable with computers and have average or better computer skills.
