Traumatic Brain Injury: March 30 1–4 pm
Presenters: Samantha Schilling Psy. D. student at Adler School of Professional Psychology and Johanna Buwalda, M.Ed., M.A. , L.C.P.C
Description/Goal: As the technology of war has changed, so to have the effects of war. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) stands among this phenomena just beginning to be understood. Despite its widespread reach in veteran and service member communities and its life changing effects, TBI remains a distant concept to service providers and mainstream society. This workshop will help us better understand TBI and begin a much needed conversation on how service providers and our society can work to alleviate its effects.

About the Lecturers
Freddi Friedman is on faculty at the Institute for Clinical Social Work and is in private practice in Chicago and Northfield. She specializes in treatment issues related to trauma and severe personality disorders and frequently presents on both topics. Additionally, she provides clinical consultation and training to developing clinicians in academic and community settings.

About the Lecturers
Amy Eldridge is Dean of the Institute for Clinical Social Work as well as a teacher and clinical consultant. She maintains a private psychotherapy and consultation practice in downtown Chicago. Dr. Eldridge has published numerous papers on clinical practice, is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the International Association of the Psychoanalytic Psychology of the Self, is on the executive board of the same organization and is on the review board of the Clinical Social Work Journal.

Gail DeLyser treats adolescents, adults, and couples in her Chicago psychotherapy practice and specializes in women’s issues. An adjunct instructor in the Psychology Department at Roosevelt University, and Co-chair of the Professional Enrichment Committee at the Institute for Clinical Social Work, she has presented on the topics of trauma and supervision.

Introduction to the Soldiers Project: April 27 1–4 pm
Presenters: Dr. Judith Broder
Description/Goal: Dr. Broder will be offering her knowledge as the founder and director of TSP. The purpose of her presentation will be to acquaint civilian mental health providers with the unique characteristics of treating military members. She will also discuss the rationale and requirements of becoming a TSP volunteer. Finally, she will be offering perspectives and information, in order to enable mental health providers to provide best practices therapy to military/families.
“I will talk about the conflicts often stirred in mental health providers when they treat people who have gone to war.” –Dr. Broder

The Emotional Wounds of War: Clinical Work with Military, Veterans, and their Families

The Institute for Clinical Social Work is pleased to present The Emotional Wounds of War: Clinical Work with Military, Veterans, and their Families, a conference that will explore the application of psychodynamically informed concepts with the most challenging, traumatized clients in equally challenging practice settings. In keynote presentations, clinical experts Commander Russell Carr, MD, and Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Yarvis, PhD, will discuss the realities of clinical work with active duty personnel and veterans. Elizabeth Rottenberg, PhD, will explore from a philosophical perspective ideas about the “time bending” nature of trauma. Additional presentations from diverse practice settings will examine the efficacy of psychodynamic treatment models with traumatized clients.
