ICSW Announces a New Master's Program in Clinical Counseling and Psychotherapy

ICSW is pleased to announce that it is launching a new master's program in clinical counseling and psychotherapy. The program — ICSW's first at the master's level — will complement the Institute's long-standing doctoral programs in clinical social work. The program plans to accept students for Fall 2012 enrollment.

The two-year master’s program in clinical counseling and psychotherapy is a non-resident, full-time course of study designed to prepare students for careers in counseling and psychotherapy, with a specific emphasis on the application of modern psychodynamic perspectives to clinical practice. After students complete the degree, they will be eligible to apply for state licensure (LPC). The program’s flexible framework consists of weekend courses and 2–3 days a week of clinical internship that accommodate work and family responsibilities. Part-time options will also be available.

If you would like to learn more about ICSW and the new Master's in Clinical Counseling and Psychotherapy, please contact Denise Duval at (312) 935-4241 or dduval@icsw.edu.

Engaging Veterans into Therapy: February 25 1–4 pm
Presenters: Johanna Buwalda M.Ed., M.A. and VVAW Military and Veterans Counseling
Description/Goal: This is the first in a series of trainings exploring therapy, support and healing with veteran and active duty soldier communities. This session will revolve around perhaps the most crucial step in the support and healing process: engaging veterans, service members and their families, friends, and loved ones into therapy. Attendees will leave with perspectives and techniques that will better equip them for one of the most difficult tasks in working with veteran and active duty soldier support and healing.

Day-to-Day Veteran Life: March 25 1–4 pm
Presenters: Johanna Buwalda, M.Ed., M.A. and VVAW Military and Veterans Counseling
Description/Goal: A critical component of support and healing in military communities is understanding the day-to-day life of veterans and active duty soldiers. This session will begin to explore some of the issues veterans and active duty soldiers are presented with on a daily basis, in order for the attendee to feel more confident and knowledgeable on veteran issues. Following sessions will delve into various aspects of the day-to-day of veterans and active duty soldiers.

The Ins and Outs of the VA: April 29 1–4 pm
Presenter: John Mundt, PhD of the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Medical Center
Description/Goal: A critical theme in this series is understanding the day-to-day issues veterans are presented with, in order to better grasp appropriate methods of therapy, support and healing. Accordingly, this session will focus on the Department of Veterans Affairs. There are a number of considerations clinicians must take in mind when working with military communities: what resources are available, what are some reasons why veterans may be hesitant or reluctant to visit the VA, how can you connect people to the VA, the limitations of the VA, etc. Upon leaving this session, attendees will have a more substantial knowledge of the VA, in order to properly support military communities.

The Soldiers Project — Challenges in Treating Veterans and their Families : May 20 1–4 pm
Presenter: Judith Broder, M.D., and founder/chair of The Soldiers Project
Description/Goal: This introduction to The Soldiers Project will acquaint civilian mental health providers with the unique characteristics of treating military members, to provide the rationale and requirements of becoming a TSP volunteer and to enable mental health providers to provide best practices therapy to military/families. Dr. Broder will then lead a discussion about the conflicts often stirred in mental health providers when they treat people who have gone to war.
