The Institute for Clinical Social Work is aware of and
endorses both its professional ethical responsibility and the federal
mandates to safeguard the rights and welfare of human subjects in all
research which fall under the auspices of the of the institution. The
Institute meets its federal mandates for protecting human subjects by
mandating that all research involving human subjects must by reviewed
and approved both initially and in an ongoing annual review by the
formal Institutional Review Board (IRB). The IRB shall be comprised of
six members: five ICSW affiliated members and one outside member. At
least three of the six members will have a PhD and all are appointed by
the Chief Academic Officer of ICSW. One member shall be the chair. The
current members of the IRB are:
Daniel Rosenfeld, LCSW, Chair: Daniel
Rosenfeld, is the former president of the Illinois Society for Clinical
Social Work and the former chair of Committee on Standards and Inquiry.
He is a member of the faculty of the Institute for Clinical Social
Work, where he is the chairman of the Institutional Review Board. He
has served on the National Association of Social Workers Committee on
Inquiry for fifteen years. He is currently in private practice in
Evanston Illinois, specializing in the treatment of children and
adolescents.
Steven Batten, PhD
Steve Batten, a graduate of the Institute for Clinical
Social Work, is a Lecturer at the School of Social Service
Administration at the University of Chicago and the Human Services and
Counseling Program at DePaul University. He has presented numerous
workshops on the local, state and national level on the impact of
traumatic loss, homicide, group therapy, transference and
countertransference issues, and sexuality and diversity. Dr. Batten is
a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 15 years experience in private
practice in Chicago where he specializes in psychodynamically oriented
individual, group, and couples therapy with adults.
Linda Freedman, PhD
Linda Freedman is a graduate of the University of
Illinois doctoral program. She is a family systems and relationship
therapist specializing in anxiety and depressive disorders in children
and adults. Her most recent research is in the area of school sexual
assault prevention programming.
Elizabeth Fung, PhD
Elizabeth Fung received her MSW at Simmons College
School of Social Work, certificate in family therapy from Smith College
School for Clinical Social Work and PhD at Institute for Clincial
Social Work. She is a senior social worker at Children's Memorial
Hospital and maintains a private practice. She was a lecturer at Loyola
University and served on National Hemophilia Foundation Board.
Currently, she serves on NASW's specialty practice section (Child,
Adolescent, and Young Adult). Her most recent research study was on the
impact of a bleeding disorder on the siblings.
Kathleen Murphy, PhD, MLIS
Kathleen Murphy received her MSW at Loyola (1983) and
PhD at Jane Addams (1988) and was in the private practice for 18 years
where she specialized in working with families and children with
chronic disease, disability, and terminal illness. She was a former
faculty member at the ICSW where she taught Research Methods. She is a
frequent speaker on the topic of coping with special needs, as well as
ethical issues in social work practice. She completed her Master's in
Library and Information Science in 2005 and currently works as the
Social Science Data Services Librarian at Northwestern University
Library.
Cynthia Stone, PhD
Cynthia Stone, Ph.D. has been a faculty member of the
ICSW since 1985 and has served on the IRB board for many years. She is
now faculty emeritus but continues her private practice and clinical
consultation in Evanston with special interests in women's issues and
spirituality.
