Announces 2023 Awardees

The Institute for Clinical Social Work (ICSW ) is pleased to announce that ICSW alumna, Dr. Myrna Orenstein is the recipient of the 2023 ICSW Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Orenstein is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist. She earned her doctorate from the Institute for Clinical Social Work in Chicago and her master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago. Dr. Orenstein is a former instructor at Oakton Community College in Illinois. She is currently an allied profession al with the Association of Educational Therapists and was on the board of the Mental Health Association of the North Shore in Illinois. She has presented at conferences and conducted workshops and classes in showing how many neurodiverse individuals have used their resiliency skills to manage difficult traumatic experiences.

Dr. Orenstein is the author of Smart But Stuck: Resilience with Learning Disabilities.

The Institute for Clinical Social Work (ICSW ) is pleased to announce The Kedzie Center is the recipient of the 2023 ICSW Community Award. The Kedzie Center is a program of Expanded Mental Health Services of Chicago NFP (EMH S). Kedzie was founded in 2010 by a group of mental health professionals and advocates who were concerned about an increasing shortage of accessible, quality community mental health services in Chicago. This group came together to develop innovative approaches to expand access to mental health services that reflect the needs and strengths of individuals, families, and communities receiving care. Dr. Angela Sedeño serves in the role of executive director at the Kedzie Center. Dr. Sedeño is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who earned her doctorate at Loyola University Chicago with a specialty in child and family psychology. She is a native Chicagoan who has worked in community mental health since 1999. Prior to joining The Kedzie Center as executive director, she served as family services program director at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. Her clinical specialties include adolescent psychology, conduct disorders, trauma informed care, acculturation , cultural identity and immigration-related stress and resilience. Other interests include social and restorative justice and the roots and impact of community violence on youth and families.

A first generation Mexican American, she is bilingual / bicultural.
